The Ford Explorer Lineup Will Expand with New Hybrid and High-Performance Models

The Ford Explorer has, over the years, routinely raised the bar for what an SUV can be and do. With the development of the 2020 model rolling forward, it looks like Ford is poised to build on its market-leading model yet again.

The newest iteration of the popular SUV won't just produce a few minor upgrades. The 2020 Explorer will make major improvements and expand on its available options in some big ways. This includes a pair of brand new trims: The Ford Explorer ST and Explorer Hybrid.

High-Performance and Hybrid Savings

Drivers looking for a Ford Explorer with a bit more oomph under the hood will find a lot to love in the new ST trim. Equipped with a specially tweaked 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, the ST will be capable of an impressive 400 horsepower with 415 pounds-feet of torque. That adds up to a top speed of 143 miles per hour.

If efficiency is more your flavor, meanwhile, the Explorer Hybrid will deliver some impressive fuel economy ratings. EPA estimates suggest that a single tank of gas, run through its 3.3-liter hybrid powertrain, will be enough to carry you more than 500 miles. That represents a major increase in its gas mileage, especially for an SUV of this size.
