History of the Ford Edge

The Ford Edge came on the scene in 2007, and it was easy to see that this mid-size Crossover SUV was not just another run-of-the-mill offering in its class. It has been called contemporary, muscular, and even "edgy" but one thing is for sure, it was never called boring. The mid-size Edge was designed to seat five people very comfortably and it makes for one cool family automobile.

The First Generation
was between 2007 and 2014. The Ford Edge was based on Ford's CD3 Platform and was offered in the following trims: SE, SEL, Limited, and Sport. The SE offered standards such as CD/MP3 player, AM/FM radio, cloth seats and air conditioning. The SEL trim was standard with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, AM/FM stereo with a 6-disc in-dash CD/MP3 player and a 6-way power driver's seat.

The Limited trim included leather-trimmed seats and a 6-way power front passenger fold-flat seat was optional. It also had dual-zone automatic climate control, SYNC, and an EasyFold second-row seat back release. In 2008, the Limited trim replaced the SEL Plus and in 2009, the Sport trim was available with leather-trimmed gray suede-like inserts, a premium AM/FM stereo, SYNC, reclining 60/40 fold-flat seats and a center fold-down armrest and second-row EasyFold seats.

The only engine available for the Edge models was the 3.5L V-6 that gave you 265 hp. This made for a lot of get-up-and-go with the six-speed automatic transmission. The Edge offered great driving manners and was tight in the curves, smooth on the road, and quiet in the roomy cabin. It came standard with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive was an option.

In 2011, the Edge saw a few upgrades that included higher quality interior materials, a redesigned instrument panel, and it now offered 285 hp with its V-6 engine. In 2012, it received Ford's 2.0L EcoBoost turbocharged four cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic that gave you a very impressive 30 mpg highway fuel economy.  In 2014, all-wheel drive was offered as an option for the SE models, and the six speed automatics now offered a new Sport Mode.

Important to note: The Edge was among the first vehicles to offer the MyFord interface system. It synced with Bluetooth steering wheel accessibility for direct audio, navigation systems, and phone communications that were displayed on an LCD touch screen.

The Second Generation
began in 2015 to present. This generation saw a completely redesigned Edge and it is now based on Ford's CD4 platform. It became more angular and polished than its previous generation and it received a new grille, headlights, a rear-view camera, a larger, more comfortable interior and LED combination tail-lights. The available lineup is the SE, SEL, Titanium, and Sport models and they can be had in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Beginning with the SE model, it offers numerous standards like 18" alloy wheels, a rearview camera, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, SYNC voice recognition with Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity that offers the capability of running apps such as Pandora through your smartphone. The six-speaker stereo system has a CD player with USB and auxiliary inputs. Available options include a rear DVD entertainment system, roof rails, and second-row outboard inflatable seatbelts.

The SEL offers the same as the SE model along with dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, keyless entry pad and keyless ignition and entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated exterior mirrors, and satellite radio. If you want more amenities, opt for the Equipment Group 201A package that includes the MyFord Touch Infotainment system that has an 8" center screen, heated front seats, a six-way power front passenger seat and SYNC turn-by-turn directions and traffic information.

The Titanium offers all that the SE ands SEL offer, plus you get a hands-free tailgate, 19" wheels, ambient interior lighting, heated front seats, an 8-way adjustable front passenger seat with power lumbar, driver memory settings, a Sony sound system with 12 speakers and an HD radio. What's not to love? Add to this the Equipment Group 301A or 302A upgrade package and you will have more amenities than you can shake a stick at beginning with heated and ventilated front and back seats and a panoramic sunroof, warning system with lane keeping assist, automatic wipers, and Ford's Enhanced Park Assist, to name just a few.

The Sport trim comes with a turbocharged 2.7L V-6 engine with a sport-tuned suspension, 20" wheels with an option to upgrade to 21" wheels, unique front and rear lower fascias, leather and suede front seats, and all of the electronic gizmos the Titanium offers. Add to this the Equipment Group 401A package and you get adaptive cruise control, a forward collision warning system with automatic braking, a 180-dergree front camera and Ford's Enhanced Park Assist, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, lane departure warnings with lane assist, and believe it or not, there is even more.
